A Spoonful of Gladiators

How can I not say something about that game last night? How can I not say anything about Jimmer Fredette who plays basketball so beautifully? How can I not give respect and credit where it's due?

We won. The biggest game of our regular season and we won. I couldn't stop smiling last night. I was so anxious, especially during that first half when it was neck and neck. And then that second half when it was so close until that last five minutes. Man, oh man.

I also wanted to give some kind of commentary to why sports are so big. I've been on both sides. The player and the fan. The gladiator and the crowd. I've never tried to put words to why fans get so worked up about their favorite teams or players and I don't know if there are any, but I'll try.

I think a bit of it is the ability to live vicariously through the athlete. To say that's all it is, is not fair. I think it could be traced back to the time before ours when you had to fight for all you're worth to defend your land, your property, and your people. Sports are wars just not as many people die and there aren't really as many things on the line. I don't know. That still doesn't satisfy my wonderings. Any ideas are welcome. I love sports, but at the end of the day, they're not that important, you know? Don't shoot me.

Oh, and my grandparents were kind enough to save me the newspapers that together make a life-size poster of Jimmer for my wall. I can't decide whether or not to put it up.
